A ten-year-old boy was found dead in his home in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Thursday and neighbors suspected that he was beaten to death by his own parents.
Kemayoran Police confirmed the death and are investigating, but refused to release any details.
Mulyadi was found with his face down on the floor by his neighbours. They became suspicious after a pungent smell came from inside the house rented by the boy’s parents.
Neighbours said that the boy, who reportedly had a intellectual disability, worked as a street singer with his mother, while his father was a bajaj driver. His parents are now missing.
Tarmi, a neighbour, said that that she thought Mulyadi’s parents often abused him. “I often heard his cries and he would show up with a swollen face and bruises all over his body,” Tarmi said. She said she saw Mulyadi’s parents leave the house a few days ago carrying large bags and a television set.
“I saw his father beat him up with a wooden stick because he only brought home Rp 4,000 (50 cents) from his street singing,” said Dodo, another neighbour.
Mulyadi’s remains were taken to Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital for an autopsy.
